Budget Wedding Cake Declares Independence From The Reception

As couples trim dessert costs, supermarket sheet cakes form a union and demand equal frosting for every guest.

LOWER WOMBLEY, Sam Sideways reports that wedding guests may soon mark lifelong romance with a cake priced below a moderately ambitious sandwich. Wedding-planning site Zola says roughly a third of couples are prepared to cut costs on cake and dessert. The ceremonial economy has taken this personally.

The National Sheet Cake Assembly has already noticed. It consists of 47 cakes, three folding tables and one tiramisu, which continues to insist it qualifies. Its chair, Maribel Crumb, said the group would no longer accept being rolled into receptions beneath plastic lids and introduced as “a practical option.”

“We have layers. We have margins. And we have carried the emotional cost of weddings for years,” said Crumb, speaking through a small ventilation hole in a cardboard bakery box. “If the happy couple wants romance, they can start by recognising our right to a corner piece with enough icing.”

The Assembly wants a minimum frosting standard and applause when the cake enters the room. It has also called for a ban on “it tastes just as good.” Each sheet cake should get a name card, a chair at the head table, and the right to refuse rectangle-based dismemberment by somebody who has just found a sword.

That has brought paperwork, naturally. The Ministry of Affordable Joy has issued a 19-page form through which couples can confirm that their dessert is financially sensible, emotionally available and not secretly a lasagna. The cake must sign it, along with two witnesses and a neutral party who has never called a wedding “the bride’s special day.”

Some guests are bringing their own forks. Officials stressed that there are no actual officials, and that “reportedly” was chosen by a committee of nervous biscuits. One man nearby said he supported the movement but hoped the cake would not become “too political.” A lemon tart fined him one napkin.

The cakes appear prepared for a long campaign. Outside the Lower Wombley Registry of Decorative Promises, hundreds of desserts raised their candles and chanted, “No crumbs without consent.” The rally ended when a chocolate mousse became sentient, requested dental coverage and was appointed deputy treasurer straight away.

Wedding planners maintain that the ceremony can remain magical, even when dessert arrives in a plastic tray with the structural confidence of a damp noticeboard. The National Sheet Cake Assembly has agreed to attend receptions, provided couples promise to love, honour and distribute the corner pieces fairly.
