Election Officials Ask Public to Wait While Democracy Completes Its Warm-Up
Some midterm races may take time to resolve, as counting advances at a speed best measured by geology.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 19, 2026, Election officials warned Monday that several midterm races will take time to settle, for reasons extending beyond California’s familiar approach to counting ballots at roughly the speed of a municipal renovation. Linda Sources reports.
The warning followed public inquiries about whether a race would be decided before the next election, the next census or the universe’s eventual heat death. Officials said everything was proceeding normally, if “normally” is understood in the sense used for glaciers and customer-service emails.
“The count is moving steadily,” said Percival Nib, deputy assistant coordinator for Electoral Momentum at the Bureau of Things That Eventually Become Clear. “One ballot has changed position since breakfast. Another has indicated that it is considering the matter.”
“The race is advancing at the blistering pace of continental drift.”
California workers kept counting narrow races with large numbers of ballots. Elsewhere, the country maintained its traditional civic practice of refreshing county results every 11 seconds. Other close contests will require review, time and consultation with people who own rulers.
That waiting has unsettled some people.
A spokesperson for the National Committee on Not Panicking addressed reporters through a conch shell in a conference room containing several hourglasses. The public, the spokesperson said, should not confuse the lack of a declared winner with a lack of activity. “The race is advancing at the pace of continental drift,” the spokesperson said. “By Thursday, it may have crossed a tectonic plate.”
Officials denied that the operation had been delayed by a pile of paperwork marked “OPEN ONLY AFTER EVERYONE HAS CALMED DOWN.” The papers were awaiting verification from retired calendars, three abacuses and a particularly judgmental egg timer.
Candidates now have time to prepare remarks about vigilance, patience and the sacred importance of every vote. Voters have snacks to arrange and county-level reporting percentages to know with an intimacy previously reserved for relatives.
At press time, one unofficial result had moved from “too early to call” to “still too early to call, but now with a tasteful border.” Officials said another update would arrive once the numbers had finished crossing the room.
