LOWER WOMBLEY, The office games season reached its improbable climax on Thursday. The town’s administrative staff defeated a sentient spreadsheet in the final of competitive cubicle archery, earning a promotion and three days of ceremonial applause.

It happened in General Administration’s open-plan department, where staff usually process forms, lose passwords, and spend long spells looking at printers as if waiting for instructions. The sport requires competitors to fire foam arrows through filing trays and avoid documents marked “quick question.”

Quarterly Projection 7B had already made a name for itself. It joined the tournament after growing laminated legs during a routine budget meeting, then got through the early rounds by rearranging its own cells and ruling several opponents “not applicable.” Officials found no weakness beyond its strong objection to being saved as a PDF.

“We had practised for weeks, but nobody expected the spreadsheet to know everyone’s middle name.” — Marta Quill, senior coordinator of recreational compliance

That confidence caused trouble in the final. Marta Quill, senior coordinator of recreational compliance, said the human captain became trapped inside a calendar invitation before the match had properly settled down. “We had practised for weeks, but nobody expected the spreadsheet to know everyone’s middle name,” she said, wearing a helmet shaped like a stapler.

The human side recovered through the filing cabinet. Junior accounts assistant Felix Nib discovered that the old cabinet travelled at high speed when addressed politely, so it rolled behind Quarterly Projection 7B, made the sound of a disappointed cupboard, and blocked the exit. The cabinet then awarded itself a penalty for obstructing the furniture.

There was nowhere left to go beside the photocopier. The team sent its final arrow into a cup labelled “TAX RECEIPTS,” which immediately appointed itself referee and showed Quarterly Projection 7B a red card for excessive formatting. The spreadsheet folded into a decorative fan and agreed to leave, provided nobody called it a table again.

The trophy consisted of twelve elastic bands and a small bronze figure trying to remember why it opened an email. Players received certificates confirming they were “above expectations, subject to review.” The filing cabinet became deputy head of sport and was issued a whistle.

Next year’s league will include break-room fencing, invoice hurdling, and a contest for the one meeting room with a window. A spokesperson for the Office Athletic Federation, speaking from beneath a desk, said the organisation was “thrilled to prove that teamwork can overcome anything, including arithmetic.”
