LOWER WOMBLEY, The town’s new Household Athletics League has given its gold cup to a tumble dryer which came second in every event. Officials found that the machine, Spinifex-9, had been quietly rotating the results.

It competed in the first Five-Drawer Cup, where refrigerators perform synchronised cooling, kettles play water polo without water, and vacuum cleaners race only when nobody is looking.

“We trained the fridge to jump, but it kept landing in next Thursday.” — Tovel Brisk, coach of the Lower Wombley appliance team

Mirelle Quonk, senior coordinator of Unnecessary Sporting Ceremonies, presented the cup after a three-hour review of the scoreboard, its shadow, and one suspiciously confident sock. Officials named Spinifex-9 champion because it showed unusual consistency in failing to be where they expected it.

The programme included competitive defrosting and a cushion-only obstacle course. There was also the demanding business of keeping a family-size lasagne warm while travelling backwards through a wardrobe. Spinifex-9 finished that event by opening its door, releasing a small cloud, and exposing a referee missing since the opening whistle.

Its coach, Tovel Brisk, called the result a victory for machines that had never been properly switched off. “We trained the fridge to jump, but it kept landing in next Thursday,” Brisk said. He then asked whether anyone had seen the team kettle.

The kettle turned up inside a trophy. It had apparently been practising a silent celebration.

The vacuum cleaner relay drew particular attention. Each machine handed a baton to itself, then filed an appeal over the handover. A man standing nearby said it had altered his understanding of sport, domestic maintenance, and the appropriate emotional response when a cupboard makes a noise.

The Lower Wombley Sporting Fixtures Office has announced a larger winter season. It will include ironing-board fencing, microwave archery, and a league for freezers that communicate solely through dramatic changes in interior lighting. Carrier pigeons will deliver entry forms, so appliances cannot fill them in early.

Spinifex-9 keeps the gold cup until next year’s ceremony. Then it is expected to defend the title against a dehumidifier with unusually strong opinions about corners. Organisers have told spectators to leave laundry, magnets, and questions about the rules at home. Each was judged to give humans an unfair advantage.
